One study I read showed that inMails have a much higher open rate than standard email. So it's no wonder that recruiters have found this to be effective. And according to LinkedIn's API terms, it's not possible to spam people (yet).

So this means that this recruiter has had to research the candidate, use up an inMail from their subscription, paste in a template etc...If they've already gone through that much trouble, they should bother to spend 2-5 extra minutes customizing the email and making it more personal.

Another thing that happens is that LinkedIn inserts their greeting automatically. So I've received inMails that have gone:

Hi Joshua,

Hi Joshua,

This occurs because the sender isn't trained on using LinkedIn. So to your point Mike, a little bit of training and quality control would go a very long way, considering the open rate for inMail.

Thanks for the article Michael.

Whilst the above email appears to be a template (and likely from a churn and burn agency), it does come down to trial and error. When I first started out contacting people via email, I didn't get much response at all.

After a couple of revisions, I have found that my email approaches provide an excellent return on investment.

The content of my emails now contain some of the ideas you mention as well as some of those mentioned in the blog link provided. I've also personalised my tone to make it read more like "me" to try and establish the all important one-to-one relationship.

Thanks again for such a relevant post.

Finally, a company that gets it. It's about minimizing the time required for the
potential solid lead to say he/she is interested and minimizing the time it takes
recruiters to identify the best candidates for a particular role.
All while respecting and building brand.

[...] Just another simple example of how timing can suck in life – This past week I was in Boston. On Sunday night I missed out on the Blogging4Jobs Webshow because the internet went down in my hotel 1 hour before show time. On Tuesday I was in meetings from early morning to late at night and I missed out on a webinar that I REALLY wanted to see sponsored by Avature (Recruiting CRM tool) and hosted by the ever brilliant Susan Burns on Talent Pooling. (Did you miss it too? Watch it here) [...]
